Getting closer

I decided to go to our account information page at TPG to check up on our download usage and to my surprise the banner at the top promoting their upcoming ADSL2+ was updated. Previously it just linked to a page showing the status of the ADSL2+ DSLAM rollout, now it links a page that not only shows the rollout but the prices too. After seeing these prices, I am getting excited. Our exchange (Jamboree Heights) is currently being upgraded and should be completed some time in April.

Our house is about 1km line-of-sight away from the exchange, or 2.2km by road. Using this image as a guide, if say the length of the copper between our house and the exchange was 2.2km, that would mean we could reach a theoretical maximum download speed of around 12-13 Mbps providing the copper is of good quality. In a worst case scenario, we would only get 1.5Mbps but hopefully that wouldn’t be the case. At $49.99 a month though for 18GB of quota, it isn’t much different to our current ADSL which gives us a download speed of 1.5Mbps with 20GB of quota. With ADSL2+ meaning the speed can only get higher, I don’t think we could go wrong by changing switching over. Any speed increase is better than no increase at all.
